About Finca San Antonio
Nilson and Lida Cielo López are a couple who cultivate coffee as equal partners. Their finca, San Antonio, is located in the village of Medina Espejo and has been in the family's possession since 2003, when Nilson inherited the farm from his father. At the time, many doubted whether coffee could thrive at such a high altitude, but the couple planted the Caturra and Colombia varieties and proved them wrong. The soil yielded excellent harvests and coffee with remarkable character.
Over the years, Nilson and Lida continued to refine their work, introducing the Castillo variety due to its resistance to disease and consistent productivity.
With each harvest, they made practical improvements to the farm. They built a small processing plant, installed parabolic dryers and tanks, developed a water purification system, and constructed a road and a house on the property. These additions helped them to process the coffee better and maintain quality at every stage.
In addition to coffee, they also grow tomatoes, beans, peas, corn, and bananas. These crops provide for their household and offer natural shade for the coffee plants. They also protect areas of native forest where squirrels and other animals live, maintaining a healthy balance between agriculture and local biodiversity.
The family now produces Caturra, Colombia, and Castillo, and has recently started growing exotic varieties such as Gesha and Bourbon Papayo. Nilson has served as the community's mayor and remains a social leader deeply involved with his neighbors. On their farm, he and Lida occasionally organize training sessions to share their knowledge of cultivation and processing and to help other farmers improve their own coffee.
Their vision for the future is simple and powerful. They want to continue to innovate, collaborate with other farmers, and pass on the López family's coffee tradition to their children. For them, coffee is not just their work. It is a way of life, a source of community, and a legacy that will hopefully live on for generations.
